I’m a little lost in these post-marathon days. I’ve had this goal for a long time and now it’s over. I’m not quite sure what to do with myself.
So, what have I been up to?
Volleyball
I’ve been asked to be an alternate for a co-worker’s volleyball team. Apparently every now and then someone can’t make it to the game so they needed an alternate…which will be me. The thing is I may have ever so slightly exaggerated my volleyball skills to my co-worker when he asked, and by exaggerate I mean that I told him I could play when in fact I have no idea if I can. And I might have left out the tiny detail that I’ve never played volleyball sober. All minor details. How hard can it be, it’s not like they’re pros. If I can play three sheets to the wind it should be a breeze sober, right?
Another Scene
Managed to make a scene at the store trying to get a 12-pack of Sam Adams Winter Classic Variety Pack out of the cooler. In all fairness it was wedged in there and even the guy who eventually helped me (after watching me put my leg up on the shelf for leverage and yanking the 12-pack repeatedly) had trouble getting it out of the cooler. I fear footage of my beer escapade will end up on the internets, but in all honesty if that’s the only beer related video of me that shows up on the internets, I’ll be lucky.
Two words: entitlement eating
Yep, still eating like I’m training. Guess I should start training again so I can maintain my current level of eating.
Contemplating
Contemplating just how intimate two people who run together become. I may have taken my relationship to the next level with my running partner. After the marathon I drank a lot of Gatorade and a lot of water. No big deal, we assumed we would be stopping a lot on the way home. What we did not plan for was getting stuck in traffic for an hour on the way out of the city. No woods, just concrete. No place to pull off the road. Nowhere. I had no choice. It was an urgent situation.
I had to pee in a water bottle. In the car. With quivering thighs. Thighs that had just hours before carried me 26.2 miles. You want to talk about skills? I know a thing or two about skills. That’s all I’m sayin’.
Wanting More
Entered the lottery for the 2010 NYC Marathon. If I don’t get in (and I don’t expect to) I’m going to do another one around the same time of year. I’m hooked. I miss training. I’m going to try to maintain the level that I’m at, but not sure if that’s possible over these winter months.
It took a lot of pain, sweat, and tears to get to this point and I’ll be damned if I’m just going to let it go. I’m joining a gym today and am going to try to run a few times a week before work and then do a long run (10-20 miles) on the weekend a few times a month.

Well whatever you do, be it drunken volleyball or competitive peeing- just make sure you keep writing! I missed your blog, I was forced to read mine over and over and critique my own writing. I was also forced to actually work at work, which is no fun at all!
Good for you girl!! I want to start training too, i feel like a fat ass and its nice working towards something. I am usually quite obsessed with working out but since ive been sick this last week I havent worked out at all. I hurt my back too so I am giving my body a break. It has been tough but it has been nice getting stuff done and having so much more time, although I need to get back to the gym to feel sane.
I wish you were my roommate so we could drink yummy beer together and finish off bottles of wine each night. My roomie is too healthy. hehe. Have a good week!!
I can be in a bottle like a champ, but then again, I am better equipped to do so! lol Miss you!!!
Sand Volleyball or Court Volleyball. There really is a difference!!! Either way, you have fun. It is my move favorite sport so I am pretty competetive.
I totally had to pee once like you in a car when i was about 15. It was only in front of my sister, so I guess that doesn't count. I didn't do it in a bottle either...it was the trash bucket that was in the car.
Keep up the good work.
How was that wine by the way? You can tell me it sucked. I dont' drink wine so it really wouldn't matter to me. :-)
You might find it interesting to know that they make these funnel things for women to use during water bottle bathroom situations. I wish I could remember what they were called so I could send you a link. It looked like it was a pretty clever invention. Haha
"All minor details.." Hhhaha, LMAO.
after running the nyc marathon, you can do anything :-)
I love the peeing in a bottle story. My kids have done that, but they are all boys. I'm not sure I'd have the aim for it! I guess one does what one has to do! I agree with Morgan U, keep blogging. You are fun to read.
Congratulations again! And I know what you mean about WHAT NOW? Now that I am over the H1N1 thing, I have no idea what to do with myself.
do another race...they have them everywhere all the time. of course, you could probably do a 5 or 10k in your sleep at this point. but it's something. and you can keep eating whatever you want.
I had the same type of pee situation on the way back to NC! I got stuck at a drawbridge!
Did you get any pee on your hands?! Even when I have a fully-functioning toilet, I still get some splashes on me.
Very rarely, of course. :o)
lady you are ambitious! for real! inspiring to me.
ps. i feel like every time i am at a gas station grabbing a 12-pack of yuengling out of the cooler people are judging me. and i look over my shoulders and am a complete cynic for about .2 minutes. when i'm back in my car i feel safe.
Congrats for doing the marathon!!
I'm impressed by your water bottle skills. I don't think I could have done it!! Nice. lol.
Isn't it amazing to say 'i'll run 10-20 miles on the weekend' now when at the beginning it was more like "I'm gonna run 10-20 miles on the weekend?!?!?" AMAZING!!! You're a true inspiration!
i always had those "post thon" now what feelings since the thon's a done deal... slow down 2 go faster... you'll figure out the what's next.
happy trails and congrats
gp who remembers doing those 3 loopers in central park for training runs..
first of all...it's so much easier for Otin to pee in a bottle...you do have mad skilz. I tend to get better at sports after I've been drinking. It's a known fact. I'll school you in pool if I've had a few. I think it's great that you are keeping up with training. If you drink more, you'll get your tolerance back :-)
